Unpacking “Cabinet”

Pidgin Issue 28 / December 2020

“But, attending to and digging a little deeper into “cabinet” reveals it is a term with other meanings that, as a set, surprisingly swerve between space, object and subject. …The term’s definitions account for not only the substance of the “stuff of life” itself, but also the space that contains it and the subjects that sustain it. An exploration of the architectural manifestations of its meanings over time shows that in its many variations, “cabinet” spatially and perceptually challenges the limits of interiority, expanding its conventional precincts to the infinite and involving a notion of the virtual in ways relevant to the present.”
